Battery health

How do I know my car battery is dying?

Slow cranking, dim lights and that clicking sound when you turn the key can all be warning signs that your battery is struggling.

Is your battery starting to struggle?

A car battery usually gives you some clues before it completely fails.

You might notice the engine takes longer to crank, the lights are not as bright as they used to be, or the car has started needing a jump start more often.

These signs do not always mean the battery is definitely finished. But they are a good reason to have it checked before you end up stuck somewhere.

At QLD Batteries, we can test your battery for free at our Darra warehouse. You do not need to buy anything.

Look out for these signs

  1. Slow starting

If the engine is taking longer than usual to turn over, your battery may be losing its ability to deliver enough starting power.

  2. Dim lights

Headlights or interior lights that appear weaker than normal can be a sign that the battery or charging system needs attention.

  3. Clicking when you start

Hearing repeated clicking when you turn the key can happen when there is not enough power available to start the engine.

  4. Repeated flat battery

If your battery keeps going flat, there may be an underlying issue. The battery itself may be weak, or something else may be draining it.

  5. Needs a jump start

Having to jump-start the vehicle more than once is a good reason to have the battery checked rather than simply charging it again.

A warning sign doesn’t always mean a new battery.

A weak battery can cause starting problems, but batteries are not the only possible cause. A test can help identify what is actually happening before you spend money replacing parts.

Better to know before it fails

You do not need to wait until your car refuses to start.

Getting the battery tested is especially useful when:

  • the engine is slow to start
  • the battery has gone flat recently
  • you have needed a jump start
  • the battery is showing other warning signs
  • you are planning a longer trip

At QLD Batteries, battery testing is free and no purchase is required.

  2. We test it

We will test the battery and explain what the result means.

  3. Make the call

If the battery is still healthy, we will tell you. If it needs replacing, we can help you find the right option.

  4. Get moving

When you buy your battery from us, fitting is free.

How do I know for sure?

The symptoms above can suggest a battery problem, but the best way to know is to test the battery.

Do not replace a battery just because the car was slow to start once.

A proper battery test gives you a better idea of whether the battery is healthy, weak or needs replacing.
